Mestre Jerônimo was born on the 24th December 1959 in Manaus, the capital city of the Amazon jungle in the North of Brazil.
Throughout his life Jerônimo has been drawn to a diversity of arts and challenging situations, all of which have contributed to his complementary education. This education, like his Capoeira art, continues to be what he calls an evolutionary process of survival.
He came to Australia on the 28th of October 1987 and began teaching Capoeira by the beach at the Bondi Pavilion complex.
Mestre Jerônimo has studied music in Brasilia, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and graduated as a professional musician and music teacher.
Since 1976, Jeronimo has performed in Brazil, Europe, Australia, USA, and other places around the world. Jeronimo has worked as a professional Double Bass player in Orchestras in Brasil and in Australia, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
In 1990, Mestre Jerônimo became an Australian citizen. Mestre JC has produced many Cds and has written and published 2 books in Australia: "Capoeira: Slave Ritual" and "Rod@ Virtual, or, Capoeira Internet." Nowadays many ‘rod@as’ have developed from his original idea.

"Capoeira do amor" became a dance form performed in Europe during the seventies using Capoeira steps and other arts. This particular "style of Capoeira" is usually performed when two performers improvise mimicking to "the love games of life". So, Capoeira, is said to be, LIFE!
The origins of Capoeira (or, kaa-poera, Capuera, etc) lie in rituals performed in the slave fields of the former Portuguese colony of Brazil. The Africans and other slaves evolved their rituals to play a unique Brazilian jogo/game.
In its totality Capoeira embraces the diversity of Brazil's cultural roots, reflecting the historical interactions between the Europeans, Africans and indigenous South American inhabitants.
Played in their completeness the rituals of Capoeira integrate a philosophical art with a way of living. The 'Jogo de Capuera' (playing Capoeira) itself can become a therapeutic experience when a trance develops --- it may bring relief and enlightenment to the performers. The ginga movement and the practice of the call or chamada (a unique Capoeira "waltz" step) can be described as a 'dance step' between two players, bringing grace and intricacy to the social contact we share in the jogo/game.
Added to the appeal of its artistic (we kaa-poera singing and playing percussion) and therapeutic qualities, Capoeira is also acrobatic and sportive, and a deadly martial art form.
This workshop will create the feel of Sunday nights at Bondi beach with the Bossa Nova repertoire from sixties: a group of friends who share the sensuality of syncopated rhythm, while being inspired by the beautiful and scantily dressed creatures that pass by.
